Mission Tropical Thunder: T+1 day until ignition...

Not long now until the start of Mission Tropical Thunder. Most of our stuff is packed and all I have to do is debug one last crappy bug and I may be able to start thinking about the actual trip.

I still need to buy a video cam at some point but will probably do that on the way over. It would have been good to get it before so we could shoot epic airport leaving-Melbs footage but it might be cheaper over there and I didn't end up having time to run out and get one anyway (read: I was so hung over last Sat that I couldn't bring myself to go into the city).

Who knows what the future holds for Team Harrison?? I don't, and neither does Starehe because we are literally flying into this one blind. Among the many experiments we are running during this trip, one is to see what happens when you do zero situational pre-planning. Will it work? Will we end up sleeping on the road? Will we be kidnapped by bandits? Will we get caught in a tropical cyclone? Will - anyway, no one knows but for some reason I have a feeling it's gonna work out just fine....

But then again, those of you who know me know that I ALWAYS say that...

Thunderbirds are go! (nearly...)

Yo mofos, Starehe and I are off to Jamaica this friday for the broventure of a life time!

If you are already feeling a bit sad because I'm gonna be out of the country for a month and hence unavailable to entertain you with witty stories of near misses during my long career as a North Korean spy, do not despair! I'll be posting various insightful/banal updates on ashemah.com throughout the trip. As we are travelling without fire-support/mission control ( a.k.a. partners) of any kind, anything could happen so I look forward to updating you all from Melbourne airport after I lose my passport in the cab on the way there...

Hopefully I'll be able to post pics as well at some point so you can see the new red, green and gold mesh tank top I plan on purchasing as soon as I step off the plane. ;)

Stay tuned!

Orca trainer dies because killer whales are giant animals and Humans cannot breathe underwater

Media_httpmsnbcmedia1_ipdlq

In other news the trainer of an extremely poisonous jellyfish at the same facility was almost stung to death recently, even though he had been training with the same jellyfish for weeks and had formed a 'special-bond' with it!! Apparently the jellyfish became agitated when forced to jump through a flaming hoop.

Pro Tip: If an animal has the word "killer" in it's colloquial name you probably should skip the whole making friends bit...

How can it take 15 minutes to install the PyDev plugin? All the time displaying endless dialogs about things no human should ever need to care about.

BBC Sport - Vancouver 2010 - Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili dies after crash

The death of a luge competitor who left the track at high speed has cast a shadow over the Winter Olympics in Canada ahead of the opening ceremony.

Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili's sled flipped and he smashed into a steel pole at the Whistler Sliding Centre, killing the 21-year-old.

It happened hours before the ceremony to open the Vancouver Games.

Georgia confirmed they will compete in the Games as a tribute to him and will march as scheduled at the ceremony.

Kumaritashvili's sled struck the inside of the track's last turn during his sixth and final training run, sending his body into the air and over a concrete wall.

His sled remained on the track, and the visor from his helmet appeared to continue down the ice.

Who designed this crap? Unpadded steel beams on the side of the track? I mean, WTF? These guys travel at over 90Km/h!

The poor guy might have survived if there had been plastic barriers or something on that corner. Not good enough. :-(
